Cornelius was a centurion in the Italian army at Caesarea. He became a Christian.


He feared God and generously gave to the poor and behaved righteously before God. So an angel of God appeared in his vision and ordered him to listen to the words of God by bringing back Peter who was in Joppa.

Cornelius sent a man and invited Peter politely and heard the gospel of the new covenant. He and all his family were baptized and became Christians.

Cornelius and all his family were saved not because of his good deeds but because God led them to receive the gospel of the new covenant, being pleased with their good deeds. Therefore the main factor that leads people to salvation is the gospel of the new covenant.

Peter saw a vision while praying just before a messenger from Cornelius arrived. It was a revelation that told Peter to preach both to the Jews and the Gentiles.

At that time, the Jews were not allowed to meet a Gentile, so when Peter met Cornelius, there was a controversy in the Church. However Peter explained to the saints the revelation he saw and the fact that the Holy Spirit descended when he preached the words of God to him.
From this time, the way to preaching the gospel of the new covenant to the Gentiles opened.
