BIblical Knowledge-History fo Israel 1(Church of God&Christ Ahnsahnghong)

▶ Why do we have to learn the history of Israel?

It is because we can know what we, the spiritual Israelites, will experience through the history of the physical Israel.

Let's understand what will happen to us, through the prophetical parts of the physical Israelite history, not through the political parts so that we can have appropriate faith as the sons and daughters of God.

Let's classify the history of Israel briefly.

1) From Adam to Noah
2) From Noah to Abraham
3) From Abraham to Moses
4) From the Exodus to the Period in Canaan That of the Judges
4) From the Exodus to the Period in Canaan and That of the Judges

5) Period of the Kings
6) Period of the Separated Kingdoms
7) Time of the Babylonian Exile and Return from the Exile
8) Jesus' Birth and Jerusalem's Fall and Restoration

▶ 1. From Adam to Noah

The line from Adam, the forefather of mankind, to Noah is written in detail in Genesis chapter 5. As the number of men increased, mEn's wickedness became great. So God judged them by water.

This judgment was written down as a warning for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.

Mt 24:37-39 "As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man."

2 Pe 3:6 "By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed.

By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men."

▶  2. From Noah to Abraham

After the flood in the days of Noah, men tried to build a Babel city so that they wouldn't be scattered, but God confused their language. Their plan to build the Babel city failed, and they were scattered over the face of the whole earth.

Afterward God's blessings were given to Abraham, a righteous man. Abraham lived in Ur of the Chaldeans with his father Terah, and moved to Haran. Then he moved to the land of Canaan as God had commanded him (Ge 11:31-12:5).

▶ 3. From Abraham to Moses

(1) Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of 12 sons. The 11th son, Joseph, was sold to Egypt because his brothers were jealous of him (Ge 37:1-36).

(2) Joseph who was sold to Egypt became a ruler of all Egypt by God's grace (Genesis chapters 39-41).

(3) Joseph's brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt because of a shortage of food due to the seven years of famine in Canaan. They met Joseph, who had become a ruler of Egypt. Then Jacob and his family moved to Egypt, leaving Canaan to live there (Genesis chapters 39-47).

(4) Joseph and all people in that age died, and a new Pharaoh who didn't know Joseph made Jacob's offspring slaves and mistreated them. The Israelites prayed God earnestly to save them from the slavery. God heard their prayers and had Moses be born.

* Pharaoh : Hebrew- , Greek - φαραώ

It was the title of the kings of Egypt. In the Egyptian language the word pharaoh means "great house." This word was originally used to describe the palace of the king.

▶ 4. From the Exodus to the Period in Canaan and That of the Judges

(1) The Exodus was a great event through which the Israelites who had been slaves in Egypt experienced God's great power (Ex 12:1-51). By keeping the Passover they were saved from a dreadful disaster in which every Egyptian firstborn―both men and animals―were killed.

They crossed the Red Sea by the power of God and began their journey in the desert.

After the Israelites crossed the Red Sea, they received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. They set up the tabernacle on the first day of the first month the next year (Exodus chapters 19, 20, 35, 36 and 40).

(2) When the Israelites arrived near Canaan, 12 spies were sent to explore the land. They spread a bad report about it, and the Israelites had to wander in the desert 40 years because of the spies' bad report (Numbers chapters 13-14).

(3) After 40 years, the Israelites who followed God could conquer the land of Canaan, being led by Joshua (Joshua chapters 1-24).

(4) In the land of Canaan whenever the Israelites worshiped idols, they were conquered and oppressed by the pagans. Whenever such a thing happened, God appointed a leader. The leaders were called judges.

※ Judges → military heroes or deliverers who led the nation of Israel against their enemies during the period between the death of Joshua and the establishment of the kingship. The judges are not transmitted from generation to generation.
